Studio Work
My studio practice moves between photography, block printing, cloth, paint, and pattern, but none of those things really live separately. One feeds the next. A photograph becomes a color palette. A carved block becomes a texture. A pattern becomes a backgroud. Something I notice while traveling turns up years later in a completely different piece of work.
I'm always collecting visual information and finding new ways to put it back together.
Block Printing
Block printing gives me a language I can keep rearranging.
Over the years I've carved drawers full of blocks, botanicals, birds, symbols, textures, shapes and marks. I can pull from that collection again and again, layering one block over another to create background, movement, pattern, subject matter and story.
I love that the same block can become something completely different depending on what sits underneath it, beside it or on top of it. The work keeps changing because the combinations are almost endless.
Photography
Photography was my first creative love.
I fell in love with a camera when I was thirteen, and photography has been the backbone of how I see ever since.
It's how I collect the world, color, texture, pattern, people, place, light, gesture, architecture, ordinary moments, and the little things that might otherwise disappear. I photograph constantly, at home and when I travel, in film and digital, black and white and color.
Those images don't stay separate from the rest of my work. They become reference, memory, palette, pattern, subject matter and story. Photography teaches me to look closer, slow down, and be present. Almost everything I make begins through the view finder.
